I suggest that for most of users the most useful (and thus to be used by default) criterion for sorting entities is either their creation time or modification time if they can be modified. So, I suggest to calculate and to keep modification time for entities according to their semantics, e.g. for job directories modification time should include modification time of child jobs and to sort entities by their modification time by default.
